Footings and Ground Slabs
Consulting Engineering & Design in Sydney

Footings and slabs are structural elements that play a fundamental role in a building. It is critical they are designed correctly, otherwise the structure may experience movement or failure.

Types of Footings and Ground Slabs ENGINEERING Services We Provide

Conventional Raft Slab Design

Also called an engineered slab or a floating slab, a raft slab consists of reinforced concrete slab on ground that is strengthened with integral concrete beams in both directions. The depth and spacing of the edge and stiffening beams depends on the type of soil the slab will be sitting on.

Strip Footings Design

One of the most common footings used in Australia, a strip footing is a strip of reinforced concrete that supports an essentially uniformly distributed load such as a wall.

Pad Footings design

The simplest and most cost-effective foundation, pad footings, also called isolated or spread footings, are mostly used for shallow foundations in order to carry and spread concentrated loads from columns or pillars. They are constructed by digging holes into the ground, fitting the holes with a reinforcement cage, and then pouring a concrete mix to ground level.

Column Footings design

One of the most simple types of foundations, a column footing is often a block of concrete on which the column sits so that the weight placed on the column can be distributed through a larger area.

Waffle Pod Footings and Slabs design

Made of reinforced concrete, a waffle slab is flat on top with a grid-like system of narrow strip footings on its bottom surface. It takes its name from these narrow strip footings or ribs which are laid perpendicular to each other with equal depth.

Bored Pier Footings design

In wet and coastal areas where footings and slabs require further support, bored pier footings come into play. Holes are drilled down to the level of good load bearing soil after which they are filled with concrete.

Load Bearing Pile Footings design

Load bearing pile footings are commonly used for high-rise buildings or bridges. However, if a home is being built on weak soil or uneven terrain, load bearing pile footings become relevant. They are pushed into the ground until a solid base can be found so that structures can be supported on top of it.

Structural Consultants is able to connect you with experienced structural engineers who will ensure that the footings and slabs for your project are designed to current Australian standards taking into account all the factors that may affect the structure.
